Internationals - Skipp's England reach Under-21 Euro final

Wed 05 July 2023, 19:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Oliver Skipp helped England through to the 2023 Under-21 European Championship finals on Wednesday evening as they defeated Israel 3-0 in Batumi.

Having edged Portugal 1-0 on Sunday in the quarter-finals, the Young Lions overcame the Mediterranean nation in their final four clash with Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, Manchester City's Cole Palmer and Aston Villa's Cameron Archer all getting on the scoresheet.

Lee Carsley's side enjoyed a bright start and should have taken the lead from the penalty spot on 17 minutes but Gibbs-White fired wide of the right upright. However, the midfielder did redeem himself late on in the first half as he headed England into the lead on 42 minutes.

Dominating proceedings, Palmer added his side's second as he squeezed in from a tight angle on 63 minutes before, in the final knockings of the clash, substitute Archer drilled home emphatically to seal the win and England's place in the final.

Oliver continued his 100 per cent record for appearances in the tournament as he came on in the 78th minute, helping England to a fifth consecutive clean sheet. He has played in each of the Young Lions' five matches to date, starting one while he has made four substitute appearances. In appearing against Israel, Skippy picked up his 23rd cap for England's Under-21s.

England will now face the winners of the other semi-final, Spain vs Ukraine, which takes this evening (kick-off 8pm UK), in Sunday's final (kick-off 5pm UK).
