Internationals - Skipp helps England through to semi-finals of Under-21 Euros

Sun 02 July 2023, 19:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Oliver Skipp played his part as England reached the last four of the 2023 Under-21 European Championships with a 1-0 win over Portugal on Sunday evening.

In a tightly-fought contest at the Ramaz Shengelia Stadium in Kutaisi, Georgia, Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game, drilling home Morgan Gibbs-White's cross on 34 minutes.

Oliver, who started the game amongst the substitutes, entered the fray with just 10 minutes to go. As Portugal laid siege on England's goal in the final minutes, backs-against-the-wall defending was required from Lee Carsley's side, including a brilliant block from our number four, who put his body on the line to deny Pedro Neto as the Wolves man struck from the edge of the area on 89 minutes.

That block helped the Young Lions to keep a fourth clean sheet in as many games at the tournament and, with them holding onto the slender advantage until the final whistle, they progressed into the semi-finals of the competition.

Into the final four for the first time since 2017, Skippy's side will now take on Israel - a side they defeated 2-0 in the group stages - in Batumi on Wednesday (5 July) for a place in Saturday's final (8 July).
