Cliff Jones: "I told the commissionaire at Highbury, 'I've just signed for Spurs'. He said, 'yeah, I've heard that before son!'"

Thu 07 July 2022, 16:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Cliff Jones played 378 times for Spurs between 1958-68, scored 159 goals and won five major trophies.

But he'll never forget his debut.

That came on 22 February, 1958 - eight days after completing his switch from Swansea Town, and no less than a north London derby against Arsenal at Highbury.

Cliff was 22 at the time, a player who, according to our official programme for a reserve match against Leicester City on the same afternoon, arrived here with 'a considerable reputation'.

He certainly lived up to it, and more!

Over 64 years later, Cliff recalled his debut and much, much more about the glory, glory days of the 1960s to SPURSPLAY, our brand-new home for live and on-demand video, in our Legacy Collection, where we'll feature some of the greats to pull on a Spurs shirt.

It's a privilege to play for Tottenham Hotspur, and the rewards come through pulling on that famous white shirt

"Spurs paid 35,000 pounds for me, a massive amount of money then," said the 1960/61 double winner. "The maximum wage then was £20 a week. I can remember my first game for Tottenham was against, of all teams, Arsenal, our big rivals.

"At the time I was doing my national service, which every lad had to do - two years' national service. I was in the Royal Horse Artillery stationed at St John's Wood. So, I made my way over from St John's Wood to the Arsenal. I arrived at Highbury and the commissionaire at the door wouldn't let me in!

"I said, 'my name is Cliff Jones, I've just signed for Spurs for 35,000 pounds. He said, 'yeah, I've heard that before son', and he wouldn't let me in! Anyway, Bill Nicholson, our manager, came out and said, 'yes, that's him, good to see you, Cliff, and by the way, you're late'. So not only would they not let me in, but I was also late! Welcome to the First Division, Cliff!"
