Internationals - Bergwijn, Hojberg win, tough day for Doherty and Parrott

Sun 05 September 2021, 09:30|Tottenham Hotspur

It was one of those days for Matt Doherty and Troy Parrott as the Republic of Ireland were held to a draw by Azerbaijan in World Cup qualifying on Saturday.

Matt and Troy both started - Matt's 22nd cap, Troy's seventh - and both had chances as the Republic dominated the Group A clash, but couldn't find that crucial breakthrough at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Matt headed over early and Troy tested Sahruddin Mehemmedeliyev from 20 yards in the second half. However, in-between, Emin Mahmudov scored from 25 yards for Azaerbaijan and it took Shane Duffy's late equaliser to rescue a point.

Steven Bergwijn and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were both late substitutes for the Netherlands and Denmark respectively, and both enjoyed victories in qualifying for Qatar 2022.

Steven came off the bench on 77 minutes for his 13th cap as the Dutch beat Montenegro 4-0 in Eindhoven. They remain second, a point behind Turkey in Group G. Pierre entered the fray later for Denmark, who needed a late goal to beat the Faroe Islands. That was Pierre's 49th cap, and the win extended the Danes' record to five wins in five to top Group F.

Hugo Lloris earned cap number 131 as France were held 1-1 by Ukraine in Kiev. Les Bleus remain top of Group D, four points clear of Finland, who have two games in hand. The pair face each other in Lyon on Tuesday. Meanwhile, fellow French goalkeeper Thimothee Lo-Tutala started as France Under-19s drew 1-1 against Slovakia in a friendly on Saturday.

Friday's action

Giovani Lo Celso started again for Argentina and helped La Albiceleste to a 3-1 win against Venezuela in South American World Cup qualifying late on Friday. Earning his 30th cap. Gio set up the first goal for Lautaro Martinez in first half added time. Argentina remain unbeaten and are second behind Brazil, who have won all seven of their matches so far. The top four go through to Qatar.

Elsewhere on Friday, Bryan Gil played 80 minutes as Spain Under-21s beat Russia 4-1 in European Championship qualifying, Jamie Donley made it two winning goals in three days as Northern Ireland Under-19s beat the Faroe Islands 1-0 in a friendly and Jordan Hackett started as England Under-18s drew 1-1 in Wales. Ryan Sessegnon and Oliver Skipp's planned Euro U21 qualifier in Romania didn't take place after two positive COVID-19 tests were reported within the party of players and support staff.
