Antonio on Sonny: "A top, modern player"

Thu 09 December 2021, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Antonio Conte feels Heung-Min Son has all the characteristics of a top player.

Sonny has starred in recent wins against Brentford and Norwich City as Antonio extended his unbeaten start as our Head Coach in the Premier League to three wins and a draw over the last week, moving us to within two points of the top four with a game in hand.

Last week, the South Korean's pace on a breakaway took him away from Brentford's defenders and allowed him to tap in Sergio Reguilon's cross to secure a 2-0 victory.

Back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, Sonny was involved in all three goals against Norwich. First, he exchanged slick passes with Lucas Moura before the Brazilian rifled a beauty into the top corner. He then delivered the corner lashed home by Davinson Sanchez for 2-0 before firing home the third himself, his sixth of this season's Premier League campaign.

He’s fast, he’s resilient, he’s strong. When you have all these characteristics, it means that you’re a top player

"For me, Sonny is a really, really good player, a top player," said Antonio. "He’s a modern player. He has great quality. He’s fast, he’s resilient, he’s strong. When you have all these characteristics, it means that you’re a top player - Sonny has all these characteristics."

Antonio was asked about Sonny's role in the team. "For me, with this system we’re playing, we’ve two number 10s, but for me, they’re two strikers," he said.

"We’re playing with a number nine that is Harry Kane, as a point of reference. Then two very offensive players, like Sonny and Lucas, in the starting XI, and we also we have Steven Bergwijn, Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil."

Speaking about the league position, Antonio added: "I think it's very important to look at ourselves, not others. The table is surely very important. I always said we want to try to stay close to the first positions... when you stay close, you can improve with work."
