Gareth Bale was talking trophies when he made his triumphant return to the Club back in September. Now he’s a step away from achieving that goal.

The Welsh star is set to start his first final for us having missed out through injury in our League Cup win against Chelsea in 2008 and coming off the bench late a year later as we lost out on penalties to Manchester United in the same competition.

Twelve years later, with four Champions League winners’ medals in the bag at Real Madrid, including scoring a famous overhead kick to help Los Blancos beat Liverpool in 2018, Gareth is will hope for third-time lucky in a Spurs shirt as we take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday (4.30pm).

Back ‘home’, nothing would mean more for the player who arrived here as a 17-year-old in May, 2007.

“Sunday is going to be massive,” he stated. “I came back and wanted to win a trophy, and we have an opportunity to do that on Sunday. Everyone knows we’ll give everything to try to win that trophy.

“We’re still in the hunt for the top four, we can still win a trophy, so we have to take the positives, and as players, we have to keep our heads down, keep working and fight until the end.”

Gareth scored a wonderful goal to lead our come-from-behind victory against Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday evening, securing the perfect start for Interim Head Coach Ryan Mason, team-mates from his first spell at Spurs.

“It’s a massive win for the confidence of everyone at the Club,” he added. “We need to keep fighting for the top four and now it’s a big game on Sunday, so good to get a win and confidence going into the final.

“We knew Southampton would be difficult, they press well, press high and we said at half-time to change a few tactical things which helped us in the second half. We took control of the game and I felt we controlled it well in the second half and deserved the victory in the end.”
