On this day: Edman's hilarious initial reaction to his iconic Anfield stunner

Tue 16 April 2024, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

On this day, 19 years ago, Erik Edman produced one of the Premier League's greatest ever goals as we earned a 2-2 draw away at soon-to-be champions of Europe Liverpool.

Despite spending just a single season with us, making just 34 appearances in Lilywhite, it is unlikely that this goal from Edman will ever be forgotten.

In a season in which the full-back had struggled for minutes as he battled with Thimothee Atouba for the starting left-back berth, an injury to the Cameroonian gave the Sweden international an opportunity to make an impression at Anfield - and boy, he certainly did that!

Coming 12 minutes into the league clash, Edman picked the ball up 48 yards out from goal, took a touch before taking another one to set himself. With the Kop in front of him, he then took the audacious decision to wallop the ball from there and what a choice it was as it flew like an arrow into the top right-hand corner.

The blinding strike took all inside stadium by surprise, and even Edman himself, who admitted after the game that he didn't really know what he was thinking when he took on the effort.

"I got the ball outside the box and just shot," he laughed as he realised such a goal deserved more in terms of description when speaking to us after the clash in April, 2005.

"I was a little confused as what to do. I was thinking maybe I should pass the ball or cross it to the far post but then I decided to shoot.

"It was a really nice feeling. I knew straight away it would be difficult for (Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy) Dudek. You have to decide so quickly and to be honest, I don't remember what I thought! Perhaps that was the best thing!"
