Bruno Saltor described our fans’ show of support and welcome ahead of Sunday’s clash against Forest as ‘emotional’ – and he’s convinced their continued support can help pull the team out of trouble in the final weeks of the season.
Thousands of supporters lined the streets as the players arrived at the stadium in scenes reminiscent of our parade after winning the UEFA Europa League last May.
The team responded with a positive start to the game but, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be as Forest’s opener late in the first half changed the momentum in their favour, in the end running out 3-0 winners.

Naturally disappointed with the result, Assistant Head Coach Bruno spoke afterwards about what it was like to be on that coach heading to the stadium. “It's one of the best experiences I've had in 25 years in professional football,” he told us.
“It was emotional getting to a stadium. The fans, they've been with us from the first minute to the last minute. When challenges and problems come in a family, what you do is get closer to each other. That's what we're trying to do in the changing room, get that connection, get everyone together because all of us, we want the same.
“When everyone is in the same direction, things can turn. The challenge is when everyone is pulling in different directions. You can see here that players, they care. Fans, they care. Everyone is in the same direction. Of course, the task is there, the situation is there, but we are sure that we can get through this.”
Igor Tudor said beforehand that the game wouldn’t be ‘decisive’ with seven matches remaining. We have a period to regroup before the next of those seven fixtures at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Sunday, April 12 (2pm UK).
Bruno added: “Winning (against Forest), obviously, would have put us in a much better situation, not just on the table, it's helping the players to feel a little bit more free. But neither was it definitive. We would have played (for) another 21 points, and we would have had to win more points. As I said, the message is we have to be together.”
