Xavi Simons has been awarded your HSBC Player of the Match after our 2-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt to see us through to the UEFA Champions League last 16 on Wednesday night.
Former Eintracht man Randal Kolo Muani broke the deadlock shortly after the half-time interval before Dominic Solanke came off the bench to score again in Frankfurt and in consecutive Champions League matches to put the game to bed at Deutsche Bank Park.
Earlier, knowing victory would seal a top eight finish in the league phase table, Xavi was denied the dream start when he sent in Randal's parried cross just three minutes in but Destiny Udogie was deemed to be interfering with play in an offside position in the build-up.
With Xavi and Wilson Odobert operating in the No 10 pockets behind frontman Randal, the attacking trio combined nicely throughout the first half which led to Wilson rattling the post on 29 minutes before our number seven was gifted the ball by goalkeeper Kaua Santos inside the area but the stopper kept out the Dutchman's attempt two minutes later.
Goalless at the break, we then found the deserved breakthrough two minutes into the second half when Xavi's pinpoint deep cross from the left channel was headed back across the six-yard box by Cristian Romero and Randal was on hand to turn the ball into the net from close range against his former club.
The second-half chances kept stacking up for us as we looked to press home our advantage. Pape Matar Sarr, after a sumptuous piece of skill from Xavi in the build-up, saw his low drive tipped round the post before the Dutch international had a deflected effort that rolled agonisingly wide of the post.
Dom, four minutes after entering the action, then sealed the win in the 77th minute with an accurate finish into the bottom corner to secure a fourth-placed finish and send us to the round of 16.
Upon his return to Germany, ex-RB Leipzig player Xavi pulled the strings throughout a tireless 90-minute display in Frankfurt and these impressive stats highlight just how important he was to last night's success. The midfielder completed all three of his attempted dribbles and drew five fouls, backing that up by creating three chances and misplacing just five of his 67 passes throughout the contest.
Whilst a silky operator on the ball, he also put in a proper shift out of possession to finish with a 73 per cent success rate in his ground duels and made seven ball recoveries, capping off another excellent performance to claim consecutive Player of the Match awards in Europe.
