Xavi dominates Dortmund to claim your Player of the Match

Wed 21 January 2026, 15:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Xavi Simons has claimed your HSBC Player of the Match after his dominant display in our 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.

First-half strikes from Cristian Romero - his first Champions League goal in our colours - and Dominic Solanke - opening his account in the competition - either side of Daniel Svensson's red card helped secure a much-needed victory with Xavi proving to be a real difference maker on the night.

The 22-year-old was at his positive best as he launched attacks with bursts of speed, snapped into tackles and seemed to be everywhere in a committed midfield performance that is made all the more impressive given he was playing through the pain barrier - just look at his social media post - throughout his 90 minutes.

The midfielder was enjoying himself as he used the extra man advantage to dictate proceedings from the middle of the park with incisive passes - that almost led to further goals from Pedro Porro and Randal Kolo Muani - and seen passionately revving up our supporters in the second half - following a sliding challenge on Yan Couto and after seeing his goal-bound shot saved by Gregor Kobel - who responded in equal measure.

The former RB Leipzig has now faced Dortmund four times in his career and come away with four victories - registering one goal and three assists during his time in Germany - with this latest success also continuing the Club's flawless record against the German giants in the competition.

Importantly, the result saw us pick up our first win in 2026 and complete a perfect home record in the Champions League this campaign, climbing up to fourth in the league phase table on the night with a great chance of securing an automatic spot in the round of 16.
