Spurs 1-2 West Ham | Thomas Frank’s verdict

Sat 17 January 2026, 18:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Thomas Frank felt Saturday’s late loss against West Ham just about summed up where we are right now, conceding: “It's classic in the situation right now, where it's not going our way.”

We started brightly at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but conceded the opener on 15 minutes when Crysencio Summerville’s shot cannoned home off Micky van de Ven. We also lost Archie Gray and Ben Davies to injury – Davies stretchered off.

We fought back and took the ascendency in the second half as Cuti Romero levelled with a towering header on 64 minutes, only for West Ham to snatch victory in the third minute of added time, Callum Wilson poking home from close range from a corner.

Speaking to us afterwards, Thomas reflectecd: “I think we started well in the first 15 of the first half, then we concede the goal and we lost, I think, structure, coolness, calmness and rushed it a little bit too much.

“I think the second half was good, the small adjustment we all did in there together, that the team came out very well, great response, got the equaliser, felt we were on top of it, creating good opportunities - I think we're the team that should have scored the 2-1 goal, which of course will change everything.

“Then it's classic in the situation right now, where it's not going our way, that we concede the second one, where of course we need to do better. We haven't conceded a chance in the second half and then concede a chance and the goal.

“It's such a frustrating time. Of course, it's emotional and tough for everyone involved in the club - players, fans, me, staff, everyone supporting the club. It’s such a tough thing to take. And in both situations, it's Bournemouth and this, both games – if we can’t win, don’t lose, because then there's just a tiny bit more positivity and you can go forward.”

There is no time to dwell, however, as we’re back in action in an important UEFA Champions League MD7 (of eight in the league phase) against Borussia Dortmund back in N17 on Tuesday evening (8pm).

Thomas added: “Of course, it's extremely tough right now for everyone involved. Extremely tough. It’s 24 hours where you can be emotionally down or frustrated or whatever it is, but then we have to go again. We have to train, recover tomorrow, and we have to find a way to be ready for Tuesday against Dortmund.”
