Spurs 1-1 Sunderland | Thomas Frank’s verdict

Sun 04 January 2026, 20:20|Tottenham Hotspur

Thomas Frank rued the lack of a second goal as he reflected on Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

We were good value for our 1-0 half-time lead at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Ben Davies proving to be the man of the moment as he came up with the breakthrough goal on his first start of the season.

But the visitors came back into the contest after the restart and although we managed to keep them largely at bay, a good spell of play with just under 10 minutes remaining saw them snatch a share of the spoils through an emphatic finish from Brian Brobbey.

Head Coach Thomas said he felt a second goal for us at 1-0 would have killed the game off as he reflected on a frustrating afternoon in north London.

“It was a positive first half, a first half where I think we were front-footed, very aggressive in the pressure, winning the ball back, ending in many very good situations, but unfortunately without the cutting edge of quality because I think we could have easily scored a second goal in the first half,” he told SPURSPLAY.

“We couldn’t keep that up in the second half for whatever reason. We still have four or five transitions where we need to score the 2-0 goal and then the game is over, but on the flip side, we gave very little away and then the one moment where they put a little bit of good play together and unfortunately it did not give us the three points I think we should have had. It’s the lack of a 2-0 goal that kills us.”

Speaking about our front-footed approach in the first period, Thomas added: “I think we really want to press and be very aggressive in the man-to-man pressure, which we were and we won it back so many times, so I was very happy with that.

“But again, in those situations, we need to get more out of them – that’s been our biggest thing, that we don’t get more out of those situations.”

We return to action at AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday evening (kick-off 7.30pm UK time).
