Vuskovic header earns Hamburg a draw against Bayern

Luka Vuskovic was back on the scoresheet on Saturday night, heading past Manuel Neuer to earn Hamburger SV a 2-2 draw against Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich at Volksparkstadion.

The 18-year-old scored his fourth goal of the season to draw his side level at 2-2 after Bayern had turned the game on its head following Fabio Vieira’s 34th-minute opener from the penalty spot.

It was our legendary former forward Harry Kane who had initially equalised for the league leaders, converting from close range with three minutes left in the first half, before former Liverpool man Luis Diaz put Bayern in front within 43 seconds of being introduced as a half-time substitute.

Bayern’s lead lasted just 7 minutes, however, as Vuskovic timed a move into the box perfectly and headed Hamburg level, scoring his second goal since the Bundesliga returned from its winter break.

Vuskovic was spotted making a run into the penalty area by William Mikelbrencis, who moved the ball to his weaker foot and hit the Croatian perfectly as he reached the six-yard box, with the 18-year-old pushing a downwards header past Neuer.

The defender has impressed in the German top flight, ranking near the top of the league for both duels and aerial duels won and being voted the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season so far at the midway point of the league season.

Vuskovic, who also won the league’s Goal of the Year award - scoring a scorpion kick against rivals Werder Bremen - has scooped up a pair of Rookie of the Month awards and has been ever-present since signing for Hamburg two games into the season.

Hamburg, who sit one point above the relegation play-off place with a game in hand on Mainz, have avoided defeat in each of their last three games heading into a big clash with 18th-placed FC Heidenheim this weekend.

A win on Saturday (February 7) could see Hamburg move as high as 11th.
