Out for the best part of three months, it was as if Guglielmo Vicario had never been away.
The goalkeeper was outstanding on his return from a fractured ankle, playing a key role as we toppled Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
‘Vic’, injured at Manchester City on 23 November – ruling him out for 21 matches in all competitions – picked up where he left off that day at the Etihad with early saves to deny Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho. He would continue his battle with Garnacho in the second half with two more smart saves.
We were well worthy of the win, however, with 22 efforts on United’s goal and the decisive moment on 13 minutes when James Maddison followed up Lucas Bergvall’s shot parried out by Andre Onana to plant home the only goal of the game.
Guglielmo and the squad’s focus is firmly on Portman Road and our next Premier League assignment on Saturday (22 February, 3pm UK), the start of another big spell with City at home on 26 February (7.30pm UK) and our return UEFA Europa League action and two legs in the Round of 16 (6/13 March) just around the corner - we'll know our opponents with the draw this Friday (12 noon UK) after the conclusion of the play-off round this week.
Now, we recover, it’s a big three points, and now it’s on us - it’s on us to keep this momentum, it’s on us to keep this feeling...
Speaking to us afterwards, Vic was asked how about his return to action. “It’s been a big night, to be fair,” he said. “Of course, the result makes everything easier. The lads, they made such a big effort. This display was brilliant in every aspect, especially the desire - we had to fight in this game because when you play against Man U, it’s always tough. They want always to challenge the physical side, so you have to put all the hard work we prepared during the week on the pitch, and I think we delivered. It has been an impressive night.
“Now, we recover, it’s a big three points, and now it’s on us – it’s on us to keep this momentum, it’s on us to keep this feeling and not let it go away. For me, especially, it is my first game after the injury, so it's big pride I will take for myself and share with my family. I’m very happy.”

Asked if anything felt different after his spell out, Vic added: “No, nothing different. It’s what I tried to expect, but it’s so hard to replicate during training because the sensations, the feelings you have in a football game are completely different to what you train. I can say the lads, they made an incredible effort and that made my life easier tonight. So, very proud of them, and big compliments to what they did and what they delivered. Now, we go again…”
