We’re back at Manchester United once again this weekend – this time in the quarter-final of the Subway Women’s League Cup – and Martha Thomas is targeting one more strong performance to round off a solid first half of the 2025/26 campaign.
Following an unbeaten run in the group phase of the competition, accumulating eight points out of three games while preserving three clean sheets, we booked our spot in the last eight of the competition and were drawn away to Marc Skinner’s side last month.
And we certainly know what to expect from our fellow Barclays Women’s Super League side, having faced United last weekend in our final league game of the calendar year, where they staged a late comeback to draw 3-3 at Leigh Sports Village.
Despite the disappointment and frustration to let a three-goal lead disappear, the Scotland international, who scored our third goal in the contest, wants to focus on the positives from large parts of the performance to take into Sunday’s cup tie.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” she told us. “It’s a bit of an unusual circumstance where we are playing the same team in back-to-back games, but I think it can also give us an advantage as we know what to expect, especially after how the last game went, how we performed and what we need to work on.
“We can take all that into this weekend as we want to progress further in this competition, so it’s an important fixture. We also want to go into Christmas and the New Year break with a positive performance once again.
“United is a tough away trip, though. They have a strong fanbase, but it’s not very likely that they concede three goals at home, let alone go three-nil down.
“We defended really well for the whole 70 minutes and then just the wave after wave of pressure they were putting on us, we ended up suffering. But there’s a lot of positives we can take from 70 minutes or so of that performance into Sunday.”
