Vilahamn on Spencer’s heroics in victory over City: “I’m so happy for her”

Tue 12 March 2024, 16:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Robert Vilahamn was full of praise for Becky Spencer after her penalty shootout heroics against Manchester City helped us to the semi-finals of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in our history.

Despite conceding in the opening stages of the game, an unfortunate deflection that left our number 22 wrong-footed, we continued to push for an equaliser and were rewarded deep in injury time when Bethany England slotted home into an empty net after a miscommunication in City’s backline.

Ending 1-1 in extra time, where Becky made an important save to keep out a curling effort from Chloe Kelly, the game went to penalties and that is where she came to the fore. The Jamaica international denied Alex Greenwood in City’s first spot-kick before producing a fantastic save for Kelly’s penalty, giving us the advantage before Amy James-Turner stepped up to fire us into the last four.

Asked about Becky’s display in his post-match interview with SPURSPLAY, Robert said: “She has been training really well over the last few weeks and then she got a chance last week and I think she had a great game against Arsenal.

“She was so calm in the goal, with her feet, making the saves and then those who missed their penalties actually scored at the World Cup (for England against Nigeria)… I’m so happy for her.”
