Martha Thomas: “We are happy with how the season has been going”

Martha Thomas wrote her name into our history books when we faced Arsenal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December.

Within 13 minutes of the second half, a well-worked move saw Celin Bizet advance down the right-hand side before sliding the ball across to an on-rushing Martha and the 27-year-old Scotland international prodded the ball home from inside the box into the bottom corner.

That goal was enough to help us secure a 1-0 victory over the Gunners – our first-ever win against our local rivals – in front of almost 20,000 fans at our world-class home in N17.

When asked about that memorable goal on Inside Spurs this week, Martha said: “It was incredible. It was a bit nervy when building out of the back as Arsenal are really good on the press, but everything just came off.

“The composure that Kit [Graham] had, the amount of players that touched the ball and that made Arsenal so open and allowed us in that situation. I just sort of kept running and the fact that Celin slowed down helped me because I went from the corner of our box to inside their box.”

The attention now turns to the Gunners on Sunday afternoon (12.30pm kick-off, live on BBC Two) and our number 17 is excited to go head-to-head at an expected sold-out Emirates Stadium.

Martha added: “We are excited for the game. It will be a big crowd, so we are looking forward to that and we know they will be gunning for us after we had beaten them earlier in the season. They would have been disappointed with that, but we were elated and it was a really good performance from us, a lovely team goal and some great defending.’

The 27-year-old, who netted three goals in two games for Scotland over the recent international break, has been in fantastic form throughout the campaign and is the Club’s leading goalscorer with nine goals in all competitions.

When reflecting on the campaign so far, our number 17 said: “It was a really strong start to the season, especially a great month in October, and then there has been a lot of highs but also been a few losses that we should have won.

“However, we know it’s a transition season for us and we are doing well considering where the club was last season. We are happy with how the season has been going, but we want to pick up three points whenever we can.”
