Spurs Down Under: Our 13 previous games in Australia

Wed 20 March 2024, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

With us set to embark on our sixth voyage to Australia this spring as we head to Melbourne for a post-season friendly with Newcastle United, we take a look back at our previous trips Down Under.

Announced on Monday, this May, we will return to Australia in the close season where we will take on the Magpies at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 22.

First making the journey to the Australasian continent in almost 50 years ago back in the spring of 1976, we have since been back Down Under on four more occasions, most recently in 2023.

Here's a look at all of the matches we have played in Oz to date...

1976

Back in the spring of 1976 came our first ever visit to Australia. As part of a wider tour that saw us travel to Canada, Fiji and Australasia, we played nine matches across a period of 26 days - five of which came Down Under.

Beginning on the 9 May, 1976, our first match in Australia came in Melbourne as we faced, and defeated, Victoria in front of 15,000 spectators.

That was out first of five victories as we enjoyed a 100 per cent record on the tour as we also enjoyed victories over Northern New South Wales (5-1) in Newcastle, an Australian National XI (3-2) in Sydney, Southern Australia (5-2) in Adelaide and Western Australia (4-0) in Perth.

1985

Our second visit Down Under came nine years later as we headed solely to Australia to take part in the International Soccer Tournament against the Australia National Team, Italian side Udinese and Brazilian outfit Vasco da Gama.

In the tournament, we played in four matches across three cities. Playing each of our fellow competitors once across a period of seven days, we returned a less than ideal set of results with defeats to both Australia in Melbourne (0-1) and then Udinese in Sydney (0-2) before we drew 1-1 with Vasco da Gama in Adelaide

Those results saw us play in the third place play-off against Udinese back in Melbourne, where we ultimately ran out 4-1 winners.

2015

It wasn't for another 30 years until we returned to Australia once again as, at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, we played out a post-season friendly Down Under.

Having enjoyed an encouraging debut season under Mauricio Pochettino, our visit to 'Straya was our second and final stop of a Asia-Pacific close-season trip as, having defeated a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur on 27 May (2-1), we faced the test of Sydney FC three days later on the Australian east coast.

And, like in Malaysia, we enjoyed a victory in Sydney as, at the iconic ANZ Stadium, the man who had just enjoyed a stunning full debut season in the Premier League - Harry Kane - struck with the sole goal of the game to see us 1-0 winners.

2016

Just over a year later and we were back Down Under as, ahead of our final campaign at White Hart Lane, and our best season to date in the Premier League, we played two International Champions Cup matches in Australia.

Returning to Oz in late July, 2016, we took on the Italian domestic treble winners Juventus and Champions League runners-up Atletico Madrid in Melbourne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground - an iconic stadium we shall return to this spring.

Unfortunately, we suffered narrow defeats in both fixtures, first losing 2-1 to Juve on 26 July before falling 1-0 to Atletico three days later.

2023

Our most recent trip Down Under came just last year as our 2023/24 pre-season tour took us across Asia and the Pacific.

And it was in Australia where the trip began as our new Head Coach, Ange Postecoglou, returned to the nation he calls home for his first game as Spurs boss.

That game came in Western Australia as we headed to the Optus Stadium in Perth to take on West Ham United and Ange's playing style was clear to see from the off.

Despite us ultimately falling to a 3-2 defeat to the Hammers in Oz, the sheer volume of free flowing and fluid attacks from us gave us a clear indication of just what Ange was looking to instil on the team - a product which has been continuously seen as he has taken charge of his first Premier League season.
