Spurs 3-1 Palace | Ange’s verdict: “Our reaction was outstanding”

Sat 02 March 2024, 18:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou was confident we’d get our rewards as long as we kept believing against Palace – and we turned a 1-0 deficit into a big 3-1 win in the Premier League thanks to three goals in 11 minutes in the second half.

We had 81% possession in what was ultimately a frustrating first half as Palace sat deep, their new 3-4-3 system under Oliver Glasner this time set up more like a 5-4-1. Timo Werner had the best chance when he broke clear from halfway, but Sam Johnstone saved the one-on-one.

We started well in the second half, created chances, Heung-Min Son struck the post but then we were hit by Palace taking the lead, Eberechi Eze pinging home a free-kick on 59 minutes.

We needed a reaction and the players delivered. Brennan Johnson made the equaliser, winning the ball from Joachim Andersen, breaking through Jefferson Lerma’s challenge and crossing for Werner to open his Spurs account on 77 minutes. Three minutes later, Cuti Romero, still up for a free-kick, climbed superbly to meet James Maddison’s cross and head us into the lead. Sonny had the final word, racing away and slotting past Johnstone.

What I did know is as long as we persisted and kept our belief, we would score. I really believed that...

Speaking to us on The Review Show, Ange told us: “It was a difficult game for us. They sat very deep, and we had to be patient. I felt like we were working them, and we know we’re not going to stop until the 100th minute. I felt at some point they would break.

“A goal would have helped that process and we had a couple of chances in the first half to do that. I still felt we were really disciplined in our approach and some of our football was making them work hard enough, which we needed to do.

“Obviously, when you then concede, that was disappointing, but it was the only time they really got into our half. Then, you’re looking for a reaction, and the reaction was outstanding.

“What I did know is as long as we persisted and kept our belief, we would score. I really believed that. We had opportunities before our first goal, again, a great impact from the subs, Brennan winning the ball, Timo, I thought he had a really good game, he was aggressive, taking on his full-back, he missed the chance in the first half which he was disappointed with, but for that crucial goal he’s in the right area, winger to winger and we get the goal - something we work on every day.”
