Opposition watch | Luton's form and players to watch on their first visit to N17 since 1991

Thu 28 March 2024, 16:30|Tottenham Hotspur

It's over 32 years since Luton Town last arrived in N17 - their last match here in the old First Division on 16 November, 1991. We came through a tough test at Kenilworth Road back in October, so how are The Hatters looking now? Here's a closer look at Rob Edwards' team ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (3pm UK).

Form

Luton always seem to be in games - very rarely losing by more than a goal - and closed things up with the likes of Forest, Everton, Brentford and Palace with a fine run of one loss in six around the turn of the year, including wins against Newcastle and Brighton. They arrive in N17 on a sequence of eight without a win, but would have been buoyed by a huge, late equaliser from Luke Berry against Forest last time out. Away form hasn't been great - they've won two of 14 on the road on their return to the top flight.

Players to watch

Thomas Kaminski has impressed in goal and is top of the 'saves' chart in the Premier League going into the weekend with 112, doing his bit behind a no-nonsense back three of Issa Kaboure, Teden Mengi and Reece Burke. Luton pose a threat from the flanks, where they've delivered more crosses than any other team in the league this term - 660 - with Chiedozie Ogbene and Alfie Doughty - and not forgetting ex-Spur Andros Townsend, who came off the bench last time out against Forest - looking to feed front man Carlton Morris. There is more to Luton than that though, underlined by recent calls to get Ross Barkley back into the England fold. Tahith Chong also brings the quality in forward areas with the team a danger on the transition from turn overs.

Manager - Rob Edwards

A defender, Edwards began his career at Villa and had spells at the likes of Palace, Derby, Wolves - where he played over 100 games - and Blackpool, who he helped take up to the Premier League in 2009/10. Capped 15 times by Wales, he turned his hand to coaching at Wolves, Telford and was then part of the England set up at the FA. He then took over at Forest Green, who he led to promotion to League One for the first time in 2021/22. Watford came calling that summer, but it didn't work out at Vicarage Road, only for local rivals Luton to appoint him a couple of months later. Edwards worked wonders at 'the Kenny' and took Luton back into the top flight of English football for the first time since 1991/92 and, indeed, into the Premier League for the first time after beating Coventry City on penalties in the Championship play-off final in May.

Last time we met

We were superb in the opening 20 minutes at Kenilworth Road back in October, but with the score remaining goalless, things changed when Yves Bissouma was sent off for a second bookable offence at the end of the first half. We strapped ourselves in, defended superbly and Micky van de Ven capped his fine display with the winner seven minutes into the second half. Deki Kulusevski put in a tireless shift, including time up front on his own, while Cuti Romero was outstanding at the back.
