Team news | Spurs vs Burnley | Micky could return for FA Cup clash

Thu 04 January 2024, 13:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Micky van de Ven could return to the matchday squad for our FA Cup third round tie with Burnley.

Taking on the Clarets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday night (kick-off 8pm UK), the Dutch international defender has been sidelined since sustaining his hamstring injury against Chelsea on 6 November.

A summer signing who made such a promising start in his first 12 games in a Spurs shirt, our Head Coach has confirmed that Micky has been training this week but has cautioned that the centre-back won't be rushed back into action after missing a significant chunk out injured.

"Micky has trained this week," Ange said. "Not sure about tomorrow's game but he might be involved in the squad, it's good to get him back.

"Obviously, he's missed a fair bit so we'll have to be careful with him."

One player who will be a new option is Dejan Kulusevski, who is available for selection once again after completing his one-match ban against Bournemouth.

However, we will be missing Alejo Veliz after the Australian provided an update that the Argentine suffered a knee injury against the Cherries last time out, one match on from opening his account for the Club against Brighton & Hove Albion.

"Alejo hurt his knee the other day and had a scan on it which will keep him out for a little while," Ange added.

"It doesn't look like he'll need surgery but it'll be a couple of months which is disappointing because he worked really hard for his opportunity and you could see he was developing the last couple of weeks, so unfortunate for him."

After Rodrigo Bentancur made a surprise return from injury against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve, that means Alejo, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon remain our longer term absentees, while captain Heung-Min Son (Asian Cup) and Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma (Africa Cup of Nations) are away on international duty.
