Tottenham Hotspur is proud to be supporting Green Football Weekend, a campaign to raise awareness of how individual action can take the fight to climate change.
In the lead up to Green Football Weekend (February 2-5), the Club will be highlighting steps fans can take to reduce their own carbon footprint in a number of areas, with the help of expert environmental journalist, Anna Turns.
In this segment, Anna takes a look at water usage and what steps can be taken to reduce wastage…
What the Club does
- Implements a water efficiency strategy across all club properties.
- Water consumption is minimised across the stadium with waterless urinals and low-flow fittings and fixtures.
- At the Training Centre, a sedum ‘green roof’ has been installed to significant portions of the main building and Player Accommodation Lodge to enable the capture and re-harvesting of rainwater across the site.
- A comprehensive drainage and extraction system is in place including through the installation of an attenuation pond and two onsite bore holes that extract water with licences and agreement from the Environment Agency.
- Excess water is diverted back to irrigation tanks for re-use.
Anna's tips
“Turning on the tap is so easy - yet the clean drinking water that flows freely is such a precious resource. Whether the task is to irrigate an entire football pitch or simply water the pot plants in your garden, the way we use water is so crucial. There are so many creative ways to encourage your family to join the challenge to save water.”
Top tips
- TURN IT OFF - turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your face – a running tap can waste more than six litres of water per minute.
- GET YOUR FILL - fill up your dishwasher and washing machine completely and use an eco-setting to minimise water usage.
- NO BUTTS - invest in a water butt to collect rainwater – use that to water your plants, wash your car and clean your windows.
