Southampton vs Spurs (Conti Cup) | Robert’s preview: “We want to keep competing in all competitions”

Wed 24 January 2024, 13:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Robert Vilahamn is keen to build on a positive start to 2024 as we face Southampton in our final group stage game of the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup on Thursday evening (7.45pm KO, live on SPURSPLAY).

Sitting second in the group on seven points, we remain in a strong position to progress into the quarter-final of the competition if we can secure a victory at Eastleigh’s Silverlake Stadium – either as one of the five group winners, if Arsenal fail to pick up maximum points against Reading, or as two of the best runners-up.

After picking up back-to-back victories since the turn of the year, Robert is looking to build on that momentum for the trip to the Saints before facing Manchester City in the Barclay’s Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s the last game of the group stage and we have a good chance to progress into the quarter-final of the competition,” Robert said. “It’s an important game for us and an opportunity to use the squad and get more minutes for them.

“We want to keep competing in all competitions, whether that’s the FA Cup or the Conti Cup, and I think we have done well in the cup competitions this season and we want to continue making steps.

“We began the momentum with that win against Arsenal in our last game of 2023 and have started this year in a good way, so we just want to keep going and continue building.”

The Saints enjoyed a positive first half of the season, currently sat fourth in the FA Women’s Championship – just two points off league leaders Charlton Athletic – and the boss is expecting a challenging evening in Eastleigh.

“Southampton are a good team that are trying to get into the WSL this season, so we can expect a tough game,” Robert added.

“They have been struggling a little bit with injuries, but you can tell they have quality and won their last game as well. They have some strong areas within their squad and that’s why they are challenging the top end of the league.

“We have played a few top teams in the Championship and we know how difficult these games can be. But, we also just need to focus on ourselves, and if we do that, then we will have a good game."
