Off The Shelf | Brennan Johnson: "Playing in this team is everything I want"

Wed 24 January 2024, 12:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Brennan Johnson is reunited with Michael Dawson in the latest episode of our official podcast Off The Shelf - available to listen, watch and download today!

Off The Shelf is available on all platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google, SPURSPLAY, our home of exclusive live and on-demand video and our official YouTube channel.

Our legendary former skipper and Off The Shelf host 'Daws' has a special relationship with the Johnson family having played with Brennan's father, David, at Nottingham Forest and then with Brennan on his return to the City Ground in 2018.

Indeed, Daws used to clean striker David's boots as part of his duties in the youth team at Forest in the late 1990s, early 2000s - David was there 2001-2006, Daws came through the system 1997-2005, before his switch to Spurs. He was then 36 when Brennan made his Forest debut at 18 in 2019. "He always had that raw talent, that pace, he just needed an opportunity," says Daws of Brennan.

Born in Nottingham, Brennan reflects on those early days at Forest and how he overcame serious injury at the age of 14 - keeping him out for 11 months - to play over 100 games for the Reds and help fire them from the bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in 2021/22.

I'm loving it, every day coming in and working with this manager and these players...

Brennan Johnson on life at Spurs

Brennan joined us at the end of the summer transfer window and can't speak highly enough of his early days at Spurs. He said 'everything felt right' about his big move to N17 and recalls his debut off the bench, a thrilling comeback win against Sheffield United in September. "It was crazy, just seeing that amount of people was quite surreal for me and when I came on, I felt their energy." He added when Dejan Kulusevski's late, late winner went in, 'I felt connected straight away'.

Brennan also speaks in glowing terms of his skipper, Heung-Min Son, 'he has everyone's respect' and the influence of his Wales team-mate Ben Davies, 'he got me involved in everything from day one, I've a lot to thank him for'.

The livewire forward also talks David Beckham, that tackle on Richarlison when he was playing for Forest last season, making his full debut in the north London derby, Gareth Bale, Wales and the World Cup, his love of fashion and loving every day here at Spurs.

He adds: "I knew this was the right club for me, the style of football and the sheer intensity in training, the standard is so high. I'm loving it, every day coming in and working with this manager and these players. I feel myself improving every day, and that's what I want to do, especially at my age, I've still so much to learn. I love it, playing in front of these fans, playing this style of football every week with great players, players I look up to. Playing in this team is everything I want."
