Charlotte Grant: “We are improving every game”

Thu 08 February 2024, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Charlotte Grant believes confidence can be taken from the performance against Manchester City in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup.

Our journey in the competition came to an end on Wednesday (7 February) evening as a stunning strike from Yui Hasegawa in the first half was enough to separate the two sides and secure Gareth Taylor’s side a 1-0 victory at Brisbane Road.

Despite falling to a narrow defeat, ‘Charli’ – who was making her fourth consecutive start in Lilywhite – highlighted the improvements in performances and says they were positives to take from the display.

“Manchester City are always a tough team to come up against but, I mean, you can see we are improving every game,” the Australian international said in a post-match interview with SPURSPLAY.

“Of course, it’s disappointing to get knocked out of the cup but I’m really proud of the girls’ efforts as we held our own out there.

“They are a quality team and they did get that goal, but I thought we defended really well and I just think we need to keep working on our attacking game and keep building.

We can take confidence from our defensive performance, so we just need to keep building on that.

“They were some patches that showed we were good on the ball, but we just need to be more confident higher up the pitch and finish our chances.

“We are getting closer each time, that was our third game against City and we were only 1-0. We can take confidence from our defensive performance, and we showed some great combinations out there, so we just need to keep building on that.”

That was our second game in the space of four days, and it doesn’t stop there, as we face Charlton Athletic in the fifth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup on Saturday evening (5.15pm KO), she said: “It has been crazy recently with a lot of games, but I think we can take confidence out of this game and focus on Charlton and, hopefully, get the win and progress in that cup.

The defender – who joined us in the opening week of the January transfer window – reflected on settling in at Hotspur Way and says she’s ‘loving’ her time in N17.

“I’m loving my time here,” Charli added. “It has been great a great challenge and it feels like I’m improving each game. The girls have been excellent in helping me feel comfortable on the pitch, but I’m loving the challenge and can’t wait to get more results with the team.”
