Spurs 2-1 Brighton | Ange's verdict: "This group always responds in the right way"

Sat 10 February 2024, 18:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou was pleased with the reaction of the players after what he described as a ‘poor’ first half as we came from 1-0 down to secure a dramatic late win against Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Ange felt the team ‘took some liberties’ in that first half as Brighton impressed and took the lead via Pascal Gross’s penalty on 17 minutes. Guglielmo Vicario also had to be at his best to keep out Danny Welbeck and Kaoru Mitoma but we did create chances, James Maddison inches wide and Jason Steele denied Dejan Kulusevski.

Pape Matar Sarr levelled on the hour as we started to get on top in the second half and Ange introduced returning Heung-Min Son and Yves Bissouma - the pair back from international duty - and Brennan Johnson as we pushed for victory.

We had a good response... and probably just edge it in the end, deserved the points, but plenty to work on

Brighton then had another good spell, Ansu Fati and Facundo Buonanotte going close before a wonderful, late, late winner in the 96th minute, starting with Ben Davies in the left-back position with the move flowing through Richarlison, Son and Maddison, who then released Richy left side, he rolled into Son who delivered an inch-perfect cross for Johnson arriving at the far post. Cue pandemonium in N17!

Speaking to The Review Show, Ange told us: “The players have showed bags of character all through the year dealing with things, whether that’s in game or trying to get results, and it was there again, we pushed them right until the end and I’ve a real belief if we keep pushing, we’ll get the outcome.

“There was a lot I didn’t enjoy today. We were really poor in the first half. Some of that was Brighton are a very good side and very disciplined, well coached, and we lacked a real discipline and took some liberties with and without the ball. That was really disappointing.

“The second half was better. We had a good response. Obviously, when you are chasing the game, you’re always susceptible to counter attacks, but I thought for the most part we handled it okay and probably just edge it in the end, deserved the points, but plenty to work on.”
