Liverpool vs Spurs (WSL) | Robert’s preview: “We are ready to head there and play our game”

Sat 03 February 2024, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Robert Vilahamn isn’t looking at Liverpool’s recent run of results in the Barclays Women’s Super League ahead of our trip to Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park on Sunday afternoon (2pm KO).

The Reds have lost back-to-back games in the WSL, suffering a heavy defeat away to Manchester City before Arsenal claimed the three points last weekend with a 2-0 victory.

However, Matt Beard’s side have picked up impressive victories across the campaign, notably, against Manchester United just before the turn of the year, and Robert expects a challenging afternoon in Merseyside.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon, Robert said: “They are trying to replicate what we are doing here by challenging the top clubs in the long run. They took steps last season as newcomers and now they do even better. They have a really good defence and have some quality players, so you can see what they are trying to do well.

“They have beaten some top teams this season, but have had some tough games. Their coach has been in this league for a long time and knows how it works, so they will try to come back from their recent results. It will be a tough game, but we are ready to head there and play our game.”

We don’t really look at the table right now, we look at the performance and how we can develop the style.

The Reds are sat fifth in the table and currently above us on goal-difference, only three points behind Manchester United in fourth, but the boss isn’t looking at the table just yet and highlighted the importance of improved performances.

“If you look at the top four and want to achieve that, then this is a very important game to win. But we don’t really look at the table right now, we look at the performance and how we can develop the style.

“It will be interesting to see how we can deal with Liverpool as I think they are an excellent team, and how we can be a little bit stronger in our press.”

The trip to Merseyside is the start of a three-game week, with a FA Women’s Continental Tyres League quarter-final tie against Manchester City on Wednesday evening (7.30pm KO) before welcoming Charlton Athletic to Brisbane Road on Saturday evening (5.15pm KO) in the fifth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

“We are training to handle two games a week, that’s how we want to make sure our players are fit enough to manage,” Robert added.

“I think you can look at the next three games and we can play quite strong teams, but on the other hand, I know we have a very strong bench and options to add a bit more competition. We have a good squad, and we will look to have a strong XI in all three games.”
