Ange Postecoglou felt we needed a third goal before the expected late rally from Everton saw us denied victory by another late, late equaliser at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Richarlison’s superb double strike in the first half - sweeping home Destiny Udogie’s cross before a 20-yard curler into the top corner - was ultimately cancelled out by two goals from set pieces, Dominic Calvert-Lewin from a corner to level at 1-1, then Jarrod Branthwaite’s equaliser from a free-kick in the 94th minute.

We had chances to extend our lead to 3-1 in the second half - Richy, Pedro Porro and James Maddison all denied by Jordan Pickford - and that ultimately cost us at the end.

It's a case of deja-vu for us - Everton have found late levellers in three of our last six visits to the blue half of Merseyside - Cenk Tosun 90+6 in 2019, Michael Keane on 90 minutes last season and now Branthwaite.

In the second half, I thought we played some decent stuff, created a few chances and probably needed a third goal to kill them off

Speaking on our Review Show, Ange reflected: “I’d never say it was a good point - we try to win games of football. Yes, disappointed not to do that today, conceding so late. Ultimately, we’ve just got to take it on the chin.

“It’s not an easy place to come and try to play fluidly. For the most part, I thought we handled it okay. We lost a bit of composure in the first half. Second half, I thought we played some decent stuff, created a few chances and probably needed a third goal to kill them off.

“You know in the last 10 minutes, everything is going to go their way, it did, you have to deal with it and unfortunately, we didn’t deal with the last one. We can only control what we do and there were little moments we could have done better.”
