Sonny's record against Premier League newcomers

Thu 14 September 2023, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son has an excellent record when facing promoted sides in the Premier League.

Our Club captain opened his 2023/24 account in emphatic style with a clinical hat-trick in our 5-2 victory at newly-promoted Burnley last time out, meaning he has been directly involved in 31 goals in his last 31 league games against such opponents (21 goals, 10 assists).

Up next are newcomers Sheffield United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off) and the South Korea international will be looking to continue his impressive streak given his history in this fixture. Against the Blades, Sonny has two goals and three assists in all four of his top-flight appearances against the Sheffield side, also providing an assist in each of his last three games in all competitions.

Our number seven's first goal in this fixture came in our 1-1 home draw in November, 2019, when we encountered a newly-promoted Blades side under Chris Wilder - who were enjoying being back in England's top tier after a 12-year absence - before getting an assist in our 3-1 defeat at Bramall Lane in July, 2020.

In that exact away game the following season, the forward turned provider again as Serge Aurier headed in his corner to open the scoring in our 3-1 victory in Yorkshire with Sonny also rounding off our 4-0 win in the return fixture in north London with a curling finish having previously assisted one of Gareth Bale's three in May, 2021.

Watford were the first promoted side the attacker netted against back in December, 2015, going on to notch 25 goals versus such teams since his debut season in England that term. Unsurprisingly, so far his best return versus Premier League newcomers came in his most prolific season in the top flight in 2021/22, contributing five goals and two assists on his way to sharing the Golden Boot with Mo Salah on 23 goals.
