Sonny on Romero, Maddison and why the collective is everything

Speaking after our fine 5-2 win at Burnley, where he’d starred with a hat-trick, Heung-Min Son was asked about the contribution of Cristian Romero and James Maddison, who joined him on the scoresheet with memorable strikes.

Skipper Sonny’s vice-captains, ‘Cuti’ hit a beauty into the top corner on the stroke of half-time, giving us an important lead going into the second half. Ten minutes into that second half, ‘Madders’ pinged a trademark curler into the corner from 20 yards to make it 3-1, before Sonny put us out of reach by completing his hat-trick.

“It’s one of the best goals I’ve ever seen from Cuti Romero,” Sonny told the Review Show on SPURSPLAY afterwards. “That’s why he’s vice-captain – in a time we needed him, he stepped up and did something amazing like that.

“He’s also doing an amazing defensive job but when that chance comes, it’s not easy to score top bins like he did, so I’m very happy that he’s working so hard for the team and he totally deserved that goal, especially just before half-time, going in 2-1 it makes a huge different vibe going into the second half. I’m so pleased and I hope he can score more goals for us.

“Madders, this is special from him. In that position, before he shot, I was probably already celebrating, because he’s right footed and it’s just a joy to watch.

“The passing, the movement, the way he sees the game, I think he’s very clever, he controls the game on the ball, off the ball as well. He always steps up. He’s played fantastic all season and he will continue in that way.

“Look, we could talk all day about Cuti, Madders, also the rest of the players who played fantastic. We don’t want to focus on any individual because it’s a team sport. Madders and Cuti played very well, fantastic, so did everyone, the players who came on, they gave everything. I’m so happy to have this group around me.”
