Martha Thomas: “I’m excited to get started, I want to make an impact”

Martha Thomas was immediately attracted to the ambition of the club as she completed her switch from Manchester United on Thursday.

The 27-year-old forward has signed a contract with the Club that will run until 2025 and will wear the number 17 shirt.

Capped 26 times by Scotland, scoring 11 goals, Martha racked up eight goals in 53 appearances for United and featured in the Women's FA Cup Final last season, where the Red Devils lost out to Chelsea.

Suffice to say, Martha brings bags of experience to N17, and she’s been impressed with what she’s seen as Robert Vilahamn leads the team into a new era in the Women’s Super League.

I’m hoping to make an impact positively in attacking ways, scoring goals, getting assists, winning games... that’s ultimately what we all want

“It feels really good and I’m really excited to get started,” said Martha, who also had spells at Charlotte 49s in USA college football, Le Havre in France and West Ham. “The ambition of the club… you can see the direction they want to go in and it’s a project I’m excited to be part of. I’m looking forward to playing and putting on the white shirt.”

Asked to describe her style of football and what she’ll bring to Spurs, Martha told us: “I would say I’m exciting as a player, I like to get on the end of things and I never give up, if we’ve lost the ball, I like to win it back straight away and create opportunities for myself or for other players.

“I’m hoping to play a big part, get on the pitch a lot, have a lot of minutes, make an impact positively in attacking ways, scoring goals, getting assists, winning games...  that’s ultimately what we all want.”

Asked for her ambitions for the season - which kicks off with a cracker in the WSL against champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 1 October (5.30pm) - Martha added: “Personally, I want to get back on the pitch playing a lot, I want to score goals, create chances, collectively, I want to help the team to achieve, to win more games than they’ve ever won (in the WSL) before, to finish as high as we ever have. I’m also really excited to meet all the fans.”
