Devine assist helps Port Vale progress in Carabao Cup

Alfie Devine assisted a late winner as Port Vale progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup for only the second time in their history on Tuesday night.

Named in the starting team for the Valiants' home tie against League Two outfit Sutton United, the midfielder was a constant threat throughout and created the most chances for his side with the decisive action coming seven minutes from time as he teed up substitute Funso Ojo to secure a 2-1 win.

In a goalless first half at Vale Park, Alfie had come close to scoring the opener on 22 minutes when his angled drive fell just the wrong side of the post and then worked a good opportunity with Tom Sang to get into the area but his cutback from the right was scrambled clear by Sutton's backline.

After a tense opening 45 minutes with nothing between the sides, Vale found the breakthrough four minutes into the second half when Josh Thomas raced the length of the opponent's half on the counter-attack and placed a tidy finish into the bottom corner before the visitors levelled through Hisham Kasimu with 20 minutes remaining.

Alfie almost regained the lead for his side immediately when his first-time attempt was somehow kept out by the outstretched boot of Sutton goalkeeper Jack Rose but the England Under-20 international did play his part in the winner on 83 minutes as he passed inside to Ojo who rifled home from 25 yards out.

Following their 3-2 win over Fleetwood Town and eliminating Crewe Alexandra via a penalty shootout in the earlier rounds, the Valiants advance to the last 16 of the competition for the first time in 17 years when we needed extra time to knock them out with an eventual 3-1 victory at White Hart Lane in the 2006/07 season.

Vale will be ball number seven for Wednesday's draw (27 September), with fourth-round ties set to take place in the week commencing 30 October.
