Defeat for young England duo

On-loan pair Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett were in action for England’s Elite League squad – formerly known as England Under-20s – on Thursday, but they couldn’t prevent the Young Lions from suffering a 2-0 defeat to Romania in Bucharest.

Romania took the lead inside five minutes through Cristian Mihai before Atanas Trică converted a penalty 10 minutes later.

England controlled much of the possession but couldn’t find a way through.

Midfielder Alfie, on loan at Port Vale, played 79 minutes, with Ipswich Town loanee Dane also starting before being withdrawn as part of a quartet of changes 10 minutes earlier.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Dejan Kulusevski was an unused substitute for Sweden as they won 3-1 at home to Moldova in a friendly.
