Spurs 2-1 Liverpool | Clive Allen's post-match analysis with Ange, Vic and Destiny

Mon 02 October 2023, 14:05|Tottenham Hotspur

Clive Allen has seen it all at Spurs. Son of double-winner Les, a lethal striker whose Club record of 49 goals in a single season, 1986/87, still stands, a member of our coaching team between 2004-2012, Clive now passes on all that knowledge to our fans in his role as a pundit and co-commentator on SPURSPLAY.

Part of that role sees the former England international join us for post-match analysis on The Review Show - and he was part of the team alongside presenter Ben Haines and commentator Rob Daly who spoke to Ange Postecoglou, Destiny Udogie and Guglielmo Vicario after the dramatic 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Here's what he had to say...

Clive and Ange

Clive: "The way the game unfolded, one extra man, then two extra men, that meant we dominated possession of the ball, but when it was 11 vs 11, I thought some of our inter play in midfield, one, two-touch to break their press and get forward, was excellent, again, these things we keep seeing and end up with us getting opportunities and bodies into the opponent’s box, you must be delighted with that…"

Ange: “Yes, I am, and I’m not saying it because I want to downplay it, but we’re only eight games into a new side, a new way of playing, to see the guys really buy into it, embrace it and to want to play this way, even against top-level opposition, is great. As you said, 11 vs 11 it was a pretty even game, we had our moments, they had theirs, they went down to 10 and until we scored, we were good, then we lost our way a little, rushed things, tried to do things individually and actually allowed them back into the game with the equaliser. The thing about Liverpool, even with 10 men, they are equally as dangerous because the game plan is the same, they play on mistakes, they have world-class players up front who can hurt you. We didn’t handle that well. I thought the second half was better because we stayed a bit calmer, maintained our pressure in the right areas and got our reward.”

Clive: "How do you instill this belief to keep going? You see the response of the crowd, they’re still believing, and every Spurs supporter believes we can keep going and get these results, as we’ve proved already…"

Ange: “It’s down to the players. We try to do it every day. We’re at it every day, the lads are hard at it, we train at high tempo, high intensity, we train as if it means everything, so we’re not just conditioning the body, we’re conditioning their minds. There are no comfort zones in what we do. That allows them when they’re out there to know that they’ve got enough in the tank to keep going, they’re not going to run out of energy, they have the belief that they can keep going because that’s what training is like, and when it happens once or twice, that helps build up the belief, where they stay calm in those moments and find solutions.”

Clive with Vic and Destiny

Clive: "I was watching you (Vicario, from commentary gantry), you went down on your haunches, gloves over your eyes - it was almost as if you didn’t want to look!"

Vic: "For a moment, I couldn’t realise what had happened. Also, with Sheffield United, now, incredible win in the last minute. I think we deserved it. We played our football for all the match and kept going."

Clive: "The belief to keep going, it’s fantastic..."

Vic: "We believe in what we do in the week in every training session, and we have to keep doing this, stay humble and I think we’ll deserve more wins like this."

Clive: "Playing with this group, all the newcomers look so much at home, I know it’s not easy, it never is when you join a new club, but there seems to be a great spirit amongst the lads..."

Vic: "We are a big group, we have big friends inside the dressing room and we want to train hard every. I think this is the most important for us. We have to keep going in this way. The noise was unbelievable. I said before, I went down on the grass and just looked up. It was crazy."
