Spurs vs Chelsea | Rob's analysis, Ben's one to watch

Mon 06 November 2023, 11:10|Tottenham Hotspur

Club commentator Rob Daly and Ben Haines, presenter of Inside Spurs, the Warm Up Show and Review Show on SPURSPLAY, look ahead to this evening's Premier League derby against Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (8pm).

Rob's analysis

"Chelsea needed that win against Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup last week. There was positive team news for the Blues as well, strengthened at centre-back with the return from injury of Benoit Badiashile, who scored in his first appearance of the season against Rovers. Mauricio Pochettino spoke afterwards of the importance of only a second start of the season for Reece James, he's coming back from injury and they've been very careful with him, so this would be a massive test, but you know the Chelsea captain will be desperate to play. Enzo Fernandez missed the Brentford defeat last weekend, but he was fit enough to start against Blackburn. Still no Christopher Nkunku, that's been a big blow, a versatile forward who can play in any of the attacking positions, but he's clinical, and that's what Chelsea have missed this season. We saw that against Brentford. Cole Palmer has been an excellent signing, though. From a Spurs point of view, Heung-Min Son has been such a revelation as a central striker, eight goals in that position now, as many as he had in the Premier League in mid-April last season. He's such a good penalty box player, so ruthless in front of goal, his finish at Palace was a good example of that. I wonder in terms of selection if there might be a change on the left, Brennan Johnson came off the bench at Palace, brilliant in helping carve out that goal for Sonny, and he's had 10 days more to improve his fitness - I wonder if he'll get an opportunity. Meanwhile, on the left, Ben Davies started at Palace but still has a knock, Destiny Udogie, as Ange Postecoglou explained, is a late call, so you could see Emerson Royal coming into that position, I thought he did well at Selhurst Park. Things are going so well at the moment... James Maddison is flying, Rodrigo Bentancur back from his long-term injury at Palace, a cameo for Bryan Gil as well, Alejo Veliz scored for the Under-21s, lots of encouragement all round."

Ben's one to watch

"I loved our patience last time out at Palace, even though the crowd was getting up at Selhurst Park, desperate for us to commit, we just waited for them to press before cutting through them for that second goal. You saw in that second goal the important role Brennan Johnson played in terms of stretching the game, offering width, but also having the quality to get that first nudge to James Maddison before getting it back and setting up Sonny. He's my one to watch this week for Spurs. At the moment, we have real strength in depth, more and more players filling the bench allowing us to be able to mix things up, players who can make a real impact, who we can look to. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brennan get a start. On the flipside, I imagine Reece James will start, given that he came back against Brentford then started against Blackburn in midweek, their captain, incredibly good going forward, a captain who leads by example, so much quality in his delivery and range of passing. I can't imagine he won't start against us. That means whoever starts for us at left-back will have his work cut out. Reece James, my one to watch for Chelsea."
