Rio on his cracker for our Under-21s at Posh: “I thought, ‘why not?'”

Mon 13 November 2023, 15:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Football is all about decision making. After 10 minutes of our Under-21s 2-0 win against Peterborough United in the Premier League Cup on Sunday, Rio Kyerematen broke forward but instead of shooting in space, looked to dribble into the box, went down and was subsequently booked.

Lesson learned.

On 33 minutes, the midfielder found himself in the same pocket of space after Alfie Dorrington won possession, central, 30 yards out. This time, he steadied himself before belting the ball into the top corner, as sweet a strike as you’ll see.

That made it 2-0 after Will Lankshear’s opener and the result was never really in doubt from there as this group of players made it 11 wins out of 11 in Under-21 football this season - eight out of eight in Premier League 2, three out of three in the Premier League Cup.

Speaking to us afterwards from Stamford’s Zeeco Stadium, Rio considered: “I had a situation like that before. I should have shot, really, but I didn’t shoot. The ball came to me again, left foot, I thought, ‘why not?’...

“It was a good feeling. I want to score goals and that will give me the confidence to hopefully score more. It’s something I’ve been working on, so I’ve got to keep trying and keep producing more goals like that.”

The team has impressed in their perfect 11 so far, but this was more about getting the job done against a Posh side looking to fight for every scrap and stay in their 3-4-3/5-3-2 shape.

Rio added: “We knew it was going to be tough, we’d prepared beforehand, Wayne (Burnett, U21 coach) showed us all what we’d be up against, so we were ready for the test. We knew it would be a battle, winning second balls, so we did that first then let our football do the talking. They were hard to break down but once we scored, I thought we were quite comfortable.”

Rio also paid tribute to the squad’s work on the training pitches at Hotspur Way as they continue to pile up positive results. “It’s been really good to be part of it,” he added. “It’s the training, mainly. We push each other and we’re all battling for places as well, healthy competition. We have to keep it going, try to keep winning. Wayne, Nigel (Gibbs, assistant coach), all the coaches have been really good on making sure standards don’t drop.”
