Opposition watch | Spurs vs Everton (Women's Super League)

Fri 03 November 2023, 10:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs Women look to pick up where they left off before the international break as we return to Women's Super League action against Everton at Orient's Brisbane Road on Sunday (2pm). Here's a closer look at The Toffees...

Form

Everton have won one of their four matches so far in this WSL campaign, although that doesn't tell the whole story. Two of the losses (Brighton 1-2, Leicester 0-1) have been by the odd goal in games where they could have got some reward, although they were beaten 5-0 last time out by Manchester United. The sole victory was significant, however - a 1-0 win over Mersey rivals Liverpool at Anfield on 15 October, Megan Finnigan scoring the winner.

Players to watch

Mersey derby match winner Megan Finnigan is a one-club player who was handed the captain’s armband ahead of the current season. The longest serving player at the club having started at the age of nine, her versatility means she can play in central midfield but has established herself in the heart of the Toffees defence. Toni Duggan came through the Everton ranks to help them win the 2009/10 Women’s FA Cup before successful spells with City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. After winning eight more domestic trophies, she returned to Everton in July 2021 and has 76 caps for England. Capped 18 times by Italy, striker Martina Piemonte arrived from Milan this summer after scoring 14 goals in 24 games for the Rossonere last season, while Aurora Galli became the first Italian women’s footballer to play in the WSL when she joined Everton in 2021.

Manager - Brian Sorensen

Brian Sorensen took over as Everton Women’s manager in April, 2022 after success at Fortuna Hjorring where, during two stints at the Danish club, he won two league titles, a domestic cup and established Fortuna as regulars in the knockout stages of the Champions League. He led Everton to sixth in the WSL in his first season last term. Sorensen also previously enjoyed cup success during spells with Danish sides IK Skovbakken and FC Nordsjaelland.

Last time we met

Scrapping away at the wrong end of the WSL last season, our last meeting against Everton proved a tough pill to swallow as we lost out in the third minute of added time at Walton Hall Park. Eveliina Summanen had equalised for us after Nicoline Sorensen’s early opener, but Aggie Beever-Jones won it in dramatic style for the home side. Thankfully, draws against Villa and Brighton and a win against Reading saw us climb away from trouble.
