Ange on Brennan: "There are definitely goals in him"

Mon 13 November 2023, 17:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou is backing Brennan Johnson to continue making his mark this season after the forward's first goal in a Spurs shirt at Wolves on Saturday.

Brennan struck early at Molineux with somewhat of a trademark goal for this team under Ange as we switched play, Pedro Porro got to the byline and crossed for Brennan, who timed his run to perfection to convert from close range.

That was with just three minutes on the clock. As the game ticked into six minutes of added time, the scoreline was the same and it looked like we might come home with maximum points, having defended stoutly, but Wolves' pressure told in the end as Pablo Sarabia (90+1) and Mario Lemina (90+6) turned it around.

Ange felt we could have been more positive after that start - Brennan agreed with that in his own post-match analysis - but spoke of Brennan's potential in the attacking third.

He's had a real disrupted beginning to his career for us and I think the more we can get him into these situations there are definitely goals in him

Asked in his post-match press conference if the goal would be a confidence boost for Brennan, he responded: "I hope so. It's not the only measure. He's one of the ones I think could have been a bit more positive for us in the first half but, again, Brennan's not really had a clear run at it.

"He's had a real disrupted beginning to his career for us and I think the more we can get him into these situations there are definitely goals in him. There's more of a goal threat in him but, again, you could see at the end he ran out of legs because he hasn't played a lot of football since the start of the year."

Ange said there were plenty of positive in defeat, adding: "I've already said the character and the commitment. I don't dismiss that. There's a massive effort to go out against a strong opponent here. The guys are playing their first games of the year, you're changing three out of a back four so it's fairly disruptive, especially when guys haven't played at all. There's a lot of positives to take from it, they'll be better for the experience, they'll be stronger, so plenty of positives."
