Scarlett the match-winner for England in Under-20 World Cup opener

Mon 22 May 2023, 21:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Dane Scarlett helped England get off to the perfect start at the Under-20 World Cup 2023 as he headed home the winner in their Group E opener against Tunisia on Monday.

Battling it out in La Plata, Argentina, the forward rose highest to power home Harvey Vale's teasing cross at the front post on 25 minutes to secure the Young Lions a 1-0 victory over their north African opposition.

While it finished with a rather narrow scoreline, England did have chances to extend their lead throughout the game with perhaps the best landing to Alfie Devine on 69 minutes. A low ball from the right flashed across goal, Alfie instinctively prodded towards goal but, unfortunately, our youngest ever first-team player and goalscorer couldn't get the desired contact to direct it goalwards, with the effort ultimately spinning inches wide of the left upright.

The midfielder - who played the full 90 minutes - later set up a great opportunity for Sheffield United's Daniel Jebbison - who replaced Dane on 81 minutes - to wrap up all three points on the stroke of full-time. Having managed to beat his man to get to the byline, Alfie produced a superb cut the ball back to find the forward, but the Blades' man could only find the right-hand post with his strike.

Our lads are next in action on Thursday evening as they take on Uruguay in the second group stage game (kick-off 7pm).
