Michael Dawson on the promoted teams | Luton Town

Sat 03 June 2023, 08:30|Tottenham Hotspur

After the joy and heartbreak of the final week of the season, we now know who we will face in the Premier League next season - familiar foes in Burnley and Sheffield United alongside a newcomer in terms of the Premier League in Luton Town, who were relegated from the old First Division in 1991/92, the season before English football’s top flight changed to the Premier League.

Legendary former captain and Club Ambassador Michael Dawson knows the Championship well - he started and ended his career in the division with Nottingham Forest and in-between his nine years at Spurs and returning to Forest, he helped Hull City win the Championship play-off final at Wembley in 2016.

Luton’s 2022/23

Luton were relegated from the old First Division in 1991/92, the season before English football changed and the Premier League was born. In 2008/09, they were relegated from League Two into the Conference. Promoted back into the Football League for 2014/15, Luton have now completed the full journey back to the top flight after three seasons in the Championship. Rob Edwards took over from Nathan Jones during the break for the World Cup in November with Luton sitting 10th. Edwards guided them into the play-offs and a final position of third thanks to an unbeaten run of 14 matches to finish the season. They then beat Sunderland in the semi-final and Coventry on penalties in the play-off final to reach the Premier League for the first time.

Daws on The Hatters

“This is the fairytale story... just look at where Luton were a few years ago. What Rob Edwards has done is unbelievable. He left Forest Green for Watford, they sacked him after 12 games, but he took his time, was linked with a few jobs, went into Luton and did an incredible job. Luton in the Premier League, good luck to them. They missed out to Huddersfield in the play-offs last season, but they’ve kept going and now they’ve made it back into the best league in the world. I’m sure people will write them off before a ball is even kicked, but what they have is a special spirit, and that can take you a long way. Luton have enjoyed a few promotions in recent years, but I doubt if their fans have had a day like the play-off final at Wembley. Now they will be going to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Old Trafford, Anfield, St James’ Park, Emirates and the Etihad. They will be underdogs in every game, but they won’t care, and they’ll embrace it and enjoy it. People talk about the style of football, but we’ve seen it in teams like Burnley. Look, every team wants to play like Pep Guardiola, but you win in the way you believe you can win with the players you have. They have that togetherness, and they will fight every minute.”

Players to watch: “Carlton Morris, Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu. I like Carlton’s physicality, he was their top scorer last season.”
