Skippy wins Under-21 Euros with England!

Oliver Skipp is a European Under-21 Champion!

Our homegrown midfielder was part of the England side that secured a dramatic 1-0 win over Spain in Saturday’s European Under-21 Championship final in Batumi, Georgia as the Young Lions lifted the trophy for the first time since 1984.

Keeping up his record of featuring in every game at the tournament, Skippy replaced Angel Gomes in the 73rd minute with England leading 1-0, Curtis Jones having deflected Cole Palmer’s free-kick into the Spanish net with virtually the last action of the first half.

Spain’s heavy pressure in the second period saw Abel Ruiz have a couple of chances, including a goal disallowed for off-side, before a lengthy VAR check saw Spain awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time, Ruiz deemed to have been fouled in the box by Levi Colwill.

However, high drama followed as England goalkeeper James Trafford saved Ruiz’s spot-kick and also made a terrific stop on the follow-up to effectively seal the trophy for his side.

Both teams subsequently were reduced to 10 men – Spain’s Antonio Blanco and England’s Morgan Gibbs-White picking up their second yellow cards amid a bad-tempered clash – but that didn’t dampen the party atmosphere for Lee Carsley’s men, who won the competition for the third time and became the first team to keep six successive clean sheets in the tournament’s history.

Skippy made one start and five substitute appearances during the competition and proudly returns to Hotspur Way with a winner’s medal.

Congratulations, Oliver!
