The Club welcomed local students to Hotspur Way today to launch this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
Now in its 24th year, the Summer Reading Challenge provides free, family-friendly, fun, reading activities to help children continue to build their skills and confidence over the summer holidays.
Supported by Nike, the Club’s Official kit provider, this year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with the Youth Sport Trust to help keep children’s minds and bodies active over the summer break with the theme: Ready, Set, Read!
The year’s theme aims to empower young people to forge new connections with others and unleash the power of play, sport, and physical activity through reading.
Starting on Saturday 8 July, children can sign up and join a superstar team of characters and their marvellous mascots as they navigate a fictional summer obstacle course brought to life with illustrations.
To celebrate the launch, earlier today, students from Oasis Hadley Academy in Enfield were invited to Hotspur Way to take part in a series of activities including football sessions hosted by Tottenham Hotspur Foundation coaches, and a creative poetry session led by local writer Paul Lyalls.
Paralympic swimmer and Summer Reading Challenge ambassador Ellie Robinson MBE, and Club Ambassador Ledley King, were both on hand to take part in the activities as well as a Q&A with the students.
Karen Napier, CEO, The Reading Agency, said: “Today’s launch event was a great success and we’re so grateful to Tottenham Hotspur for supporting this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. We know there is a real demand from families to have in-person activities to get involved in over the summer holiday and this year's 'Ready, Set, Read!' theme provides the perfect opportunity to get children together to have fun and enjoy the power of reading."
Speaking at the launch, Ledley said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic initiative and it’s so important we encourage children to stay both physically and mentally active during the summer holidays. Last year over 723,000 children and families in the UK took part in the challenge - hopefully this year even more join in and we can beat that number!”
