What a day for Harry Kane. A wonderful tifo tribute from the fans, a special trophy to mark becoming the Club’s all-time record goalscorer, leading the team out with his family and, of course, contributing to a big 2-0 win against West Ham.
Harry broke the great Jimmy Greaves’ record of 266 goals - a record that had stood since 1970 - when he struck the winner and number 267 for the Club in the recent win against Manchester City.
Sunday represented our first match back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since then, and a chance for the fans and Club to mark the Academy graduate’s achievement. The results certainly struck a chord with the striker, as Harry led the team out as captain in Hugo Lloris’ absence with his daughters as over 17,000 fans in our South Stand joined together to form a tifo spelling his name.
Earlier, a poignant moment pitchside as Greavsie’s widow, Irene, and daughter, Mitzy, presented a specially-designed trophy on behalf of the Club, a cast of his boot in silver with all of his 267 goals engraved around the plinth.
“It was amazing,” Harry told us afterwards in the tunnel after goals from Emerson Royal and Heung-Min Son secured victory. “A big thank-you to the fans and the Club for that. To lead the boys out as captain, with my family there as well, my two daughters with me, Kate and my little boy on the touchline, it was a really overwhelming feeling.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for doing that for me. Then the special presentation, as well, with all the goals inscribed on it, I can’t thank everyone enough.”
Of course, the win was all-important - Harry provided the assist for Sonny to secure it - and three points that moved us back up to fourth in the Premier League.
“That was important and topped off a special day,” added Harry. “In this league, you have to keep fighting, keep trying to pick up results. We know there are times where we need to be better and we need to be more consistent, but we’re working and hopefully that consistency will come between now and the end of the season.
“We’ve a lot to play for, FA Cup, Champions League, obviously now fourth in the Premier League, so we want to push on as much as we can and see where it takes us. We need to stay focussed. We’ve a week now until Chelsea, and then the games come thick and fast, so hopefully we’ll be ready.”
