Five... late, late thrillers against the Hammers

Thu 16 February 2023, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

There's never a dull moment against West Ham - 53 meetings in the Premier League have yielded 141 goals, 10 red cards and no shortage of drama!

Ahead of the latest instalment of this north v east London rivalry at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (4.30pm) we've looked back a five thrilling late wins against the Hammers...

Spurs 3-2 West Ham - 15/09/2002

A match that typifies this rivalry - all seemingly quiet for an hour, then five goals, a red card, a penalty and late winner! We took the lead twice - Simon Davies from Matt Etherington's pass (62 minutes), Teddy Sheringham's penalty (71, Ian Pearce sent off for the challenge) - only for West Ham to reply on both occasions. With two minutes left, an unlikely hero... Anthony Gardner strolled out of defence, kept going and eventually took aim from 25 yards, his shot deflecting home off Gary Breen, one of only three goals in 144 appearances for the big defender.

West Ham 3-4 Spurs - 4/3/2007

If you had to pick one, would this be it? Fans still talk about Paul Stalteri's winner to this day, as the full-back somehow found himself bursting forward in injury time to follow in Jermain Defoe's shot and tap home a famous winner. What a game. West Ham were 2-0 up at half-time through Mark Noble and Carlos Tevez, but we hit back in the second half and were level just after the hour via Defoe's penalty and Teemu Tainio's splendid volley. Bobby Zamora looked to have won it for West Ham on 85 minutes but we came again, Dimitar Berbatov clipped home a free-kick on 89 minutes before Stalteri's magic moment secured victory.

West Ham 2-3 Spurs - 25/2/2013

Gareth Bale was at the top of his game when we travelled to Upton Park in February, 2013, and produced one of our best goals of the Premier League era to win another belter. Once again, we had to come from behind - Bale fired us ahead on 13 minutes but West Ham responded with goals from Andy Carroll (penalty, 25 minutes) and Joe Cole (58). Gylfi Sigurdsson levelled it up on 76 minutes before Bale took us to victory. Dumped to the floor by Joey O'Brien moments before, Bale took the ball from Tom Carroll some 35 yards out, shifted it out of his feet and hammered it into the top corner, a thing of beauty!

West Ham 0-1 Spurs - 16/8/2014

What a way to introduce yourself! Seven years after Paul Stalteri's late, late show at Upton Park, another right-back repeated the trick. This time, debutant Eric Dier broke from deep to collect Harry Kane's pass, skip past Adrian and roll home the winner in the 93rd minute. Mauricio Pochettino's first game in charge was full of incident. Dier had started at centre-back, but Kyle Naughton was sent off on 29 minutes, so Dier switched to right-back. Mark Noble missed a penalty and second yellow for James Collins levelled the teams up for the final half-hour. Both teams had chances before Dier struck the decisive blow in the first of his 309 appearances to date...

Spurs 3-2 West Ham - 19/11/2016

We were proudly unbeaten in our last season at White Hart Lane - this was the closest we came to losing at home all season. West Ham led twice and held that lead going into the final minutes, before Harry Kane struck twice to turn it all around. Heung-Min Son played a huge part in our revival, coming off the bench on 72 minutes, setting up the equaliser on 89 and then being fouled in the box to allow Harry to fire home the winner from the penalty spot in the 91st minute. Earlier, Harry Winks scored his first goal for the Club, pulling us level after Michail Antonio's opener. Manuel Lanzini restored the Hammers' lead from the spot on 68 minutes but as time ran out - as you know in this fixture - it's never quite done and dusted!
