Emerson on a ‘very special’ night against West Ham ahead of his ‘Royal’ arrival

Mon 20 February 2023, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

What an evening it was for Emerson Royal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Not only did he help us to a 2-0 win over West Ham with a fine opener, but he also took the moment to dedicate his goal to his pregnant girlfriend, who was watching on from the stands.

Showing brilliant composure to open his account in N17 this season, the Brazil international only had one thing on his mind as he wheeled away to celebrate his fine finish on 56 minutes.

With his team-mates swarming him in adulation, Emerson demanded the match ball, placed it up his shirt and proudly looked up to the crowd to dedicate the strike to his girlfriend, Estela, who is expecting their first child.

A pass from a wing back and a goal from another; it was wonderful. It was a very special night for me!

“It was a special night for me. It was really important to have my girlfriend in the crowd,” said the 24-year-old. “With the news of our child coming, it is more than special for me.

“We’ve been together for a while now, three years in total, and we’re starting a new chapter in our lives together. I do everything for them.”

After a goalless first half with both defences cancelling each other out, Emerson’s goal provided the spark 11 minutes after the break to ignite our inspired second-half performance.

Our number 12 coolly finished off a flowing team move - which included an exquisite pass from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and an assist from opposite wing-back Ben Davies - and he is delighted to see that his hard work on training pitch is paying off.

“I am really happy right now,” he said. “The truth is, I’ve been hoping to score for a little while now and it happened, I’ve been working really hard.

“Ben gave the assist and I’m very happy for that! A pass from a wing back and a goal from another, it was wonderful. It was a very special night for me.

“We wanted to give back to our fans and to get out of a difficult situation with a win - we’ve done that in a fantastic way.”
