They may be from different ends of the pitch, but Harry Kane and Fraser Forster are very much on the same wavelength when it comes to what they believe was key to Sunday’s win against Chelsea and our current run of four wins in five in the Premier League - clean sheets.
As always, Harry did the business at the sharp end, bagging Spurs goal number 268 and his 20th of the season to secure the points and 2-0 win nine minutes from time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Oliver Skipp had blasted us into the lead with his first goal seconds into the second half.
However, the foundations in this current run have been laid defensively. We’ve kept clean sheets in all of the four wins - Fulham, City, West Ham and Chelsea - and the only blip, at Leicester, led to defeat.
So it was no surprise to listen to Harry and Fraser talk about the importance of keeping it clean when they spoke after Sunday’s victory.
Highlights - Spurs 2-0 Chelsea
Fraser Forster
“We’ve discussed it a lot, keeping clean sheets, because we know if we’re defensively strong and compact then with the attacking threat we have, we’ll cause teams problems. It’s a great foundation and we’ve found that in the last couple of games. Chelsea are a fantastic team, quality all over the pitch, but they’re having a tough spell. This result gives everyone such a lift, a boost of confidence and that’s important going into this run of games. We’ve huge games coming up and we want to do well in each competition. Confidence is high and we’ve a lot to be positive about. If we keep working hard and doing what we’re doing, then we’ll cause teams plenty of problems.”
Harry Kane
“We spoke about it a lot over the last few weeks - clean sheets are going to win us games, because we have good attacking power and we’re going to create chances. We’ve done that well, apart from the Leicester game, which was a blip, but in the games around that we’ve been solid and kept clean sheets. If we want to be around the top four at the end of the season, we’re going to need performances like that. It was a really important result, Chelsea are a top team, tough to play against and we’ve struggled (against them) especially here at home in the last few years. We played really well, especially in the second half, when I thought we put our foot on the pedal and deserved the 2-0 win.”
