That famous smile beaming, Heung-Min Son described Pape Sarr as ‘a little Sonny’ after the midfielder’s fine display in our 2-0 win against Manchester United was capped by his first goal for the Club, a huge moment in the game.
Pape, still just 20, struck four minutes into a second half we would go on to dominate on our way to a deserved victory against Erik ten Hag’s men on a joyful evening at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Senegal international Pape was in the right place at the right time to convert Deki Kulusevski’s cross, one of five efforts he had on goal as he illustrated the box-to-box nature of his game. Those five efforts contributed to 17 in an open game as Ben Davies, via Lisandro Martinez’s deflection, secured the points in the 83rd minute.
Speaking on SPURSPLAY’s Review Show, both Ange and Sonny were full of praise for Pape’s display and the importance of that first goal, both in the context of the match and for Pape’s own confidence, his first Spurs goal in his 16th appearance.
Asked what Pape is like around the squad, new skipper Sonny told us: “He’s a little Sonny! When I look at him, he just reminds me of what I was like when I joined the Spurs. He’s always laughing with good energy. He always brings the positive energy, he’s a happy guy and that’s why I’m always happy to be around him. Everyone was so happy for him that he scored his first goal for Spurs and in the Premier League. He totally deserved it.”
Ange added: “He’s got unbelievable energy, but there is also quality there. He just works so hard, but his ability to take the ball on the run and move smoothly through the lines... and he’s a goal threat because he gets into the box.
“I thought he was outstanding and when you think that he’s 20, Destiny is 20, Mick van de Ven is 22, Pedro is 23, Deki’s 23, and, to be fair, the experienced players like Sonny and Madders were brilliant guiding them through. That’s the exciting thing, they are such a young group, and you know there is growth there. I better not stuff it up, mate!”
