Fulham vs Spurs | League Cup second round records

Tue 29 August 2023, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

This evening, we kick-off our 2023/243 Carabao Cup campaign as we take on Fulham in the second round.

Ahead of the game, here is a quick look at how we, and our opposition Fulham, have fared at this stage of the competition.

A rare appearance

Entering the League Cup at the second round stage has been something of a rarity for us in years gone by.

With the growth of the Club over the last 20 years, our seasonal finishes in the higher echelons of the Premier League in that time has seen us generally enter the League Cup at the third round stage.

In fact, it has been over 14 years since we last appeared in this round of the competition - and that was a trip to Doncaster Rovers in August, 2009, where we ran out 5-1 winners.

Highlights | Doncaster 1-5 Spurs | August, 2009

In total, we have appeared at this stage of the competition on 39 occasions since our first entry in September, 1966. From those 39 ties, we have progressed on 33 occasions.

Our League Cup record versus Fulham

While it has been a while since we last faced a League Cup second round tie, you would have to go back even further to the last time we met Fulham in the competition.

With it being 14 years since we last took on a second round tie in this competition, it is 22 years since we last faced Fulham in the League Cup. That was a fourth round meeting in, what was then known as, the Worthington Cup. We ran out 2-1 winners that night, Sergei Rebrov's opener being cancelled out by  Barry Hayles before Simon Davies scored a late winner.

We then defeated Bolton Wanderers 6-0 in the last eight and then Chelsea 6-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals before falling 2-1 to Blackburn Rovers in the final at the Millennium Stadium.

We have met Fulham on two other occasions in the League Cup. Both again coming in the fourth round, we edged the Whites 1-0 at White Hart Lane in December, 1981 before falling 3-1 to them at Craven Cottage in December, 1999.

Fulham's second round record

Over recent seasons, Fulham have struggled when it comes to their second round outings in the League Cup.

In their last six campaigns, they have failed to progress from 50 per cent of those ties. That includes last season as they fell to League Two side Crawley Town. Making 10 changes from a 3-2 win over Brentford in the Premier League, the Whites lost 2-1 to the Red Devils at the Broadfield Stadium.

Former Spurs Academy defender Tobi Omole played for Crawley that night while former Spurs goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was on the bench for the side from west London.
