Brentford 2-2 Spurs | Clive Allen on Yves Bissouma’s display in ‘a vital role’

Mon 14 August 2023, 15:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Yves Bissouma’s performance in our 2-2 draw at Brentford rightly earned the Man of the Match award and praise from our SPURSPLAY pundit and Spurs legend, Clive Allen.

Yves was broadcaster Sky Sports’ and our fans’ MOTM for a display where he enjoyed more touches of the ball than any other player (138), made more passes than any other player (116), enjoying a 92 per cent pass success rate, while he also completed more dribbles than any other player (five), had most entries into the final third (15) and passes completed between the lines (six).

Analysing the game with presenter Ben Haines on our all-new Review Show on SPURSPLAY, Clive, four years as a player, nine as a coach, whose record of 49 goals in a single season for us in 1986/87 still stands, Clive underlined Yves’ importance in Ange Postecoglou’s set up.

Ben: “What did you think about Yves’ performance?”

Clive: “It was an outstanding performance in respect of the way the manager wants the team to play. He filled that role perfectly. The way he contributed to the team meant he deserved his Man of the Match award, but I also liked his response. He would have preferred a win, not necessarily that he had such a great game, but that we win. It was a really good start for him.”

Ben: “Do you think, Clive, that the chances are this season that if we win a game, it will have a lot to do with Yves? The way he linked the midfield, the ability on the ball under pressure...”

Clive: “You’ve got to have a player who can receive the ball in tight areas under a lot of pressure, retains possession of the ball and feeds the ball forward, as we saw when Maddison created the chance (in the second half) for Richarlison. It’s a vital role. I thought it was a great start and I just like the way he responded in that he would prefer a win rather than being Man of the Match.”
