Barbora Votíková: “This league is the centre of women’s football”

Barbora Votíková is excited to get started in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Signing a two-year-deal with the Club earlier today (Thursday 17 August), the 26-year-old Czech goalkeeper joins us with us with quite the CV having played at the highest level in European football.

Having won four league titles in her homeland, as well as the Czech Cup, Barbora has also regularly featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals on four occasions while she also reached the competition’s last four in her first of two campaigns with Paris Saint-Germain (2021-2023). She also won the French Cup later that term.

Now though, a new challenge awaits her as she joins us in north London and looks to make her mark in England’s top flight – a league she feels is now ‘the centre of women’s football’.

“It feels amazing. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a couple of months now and finally I’m here,” she beamed in her first interview with SPURSPLAY. “It’s going to be a big challenge and (it’s the) experience that I’ve been seeking. This league is the centre of women’s football now and I want to be a part of it.

“It’s a big honour to leave a Czech mark here in this league. Hopefully I’m going to bring all the experiences from my teams and national team during my career. I’m very excited to start the season.”

Bringing a vast amount of experience with her, former Division 1 Féminine Goalkeeper of the Year nominee will now be competing with Becky Spencer, who has just enjoyed a fine maiden World Cup campaign with Jamaica, for the starting goalkeeper spot in our side.

But that is the sort of challenge that the Czech goalkeeper relishes, and now she can’t wait to get to work alongside Becky when she returns to Hotspur Way.

“I’m excited to see Becky when she comes back from the World Cup because she’s going to bring a lot of experience from there,” Barbora said. “I believe we’ll be able to push each other to be the best.

Interestingly, it’s not just a football career that the Czech Republic international has pursued. The YouTube star, who has almost 500,000 subscribers to her channel, is also an author and has experience as an actress.

“Running my YouTube channel, sometimes I’m doing vlogs from my life,” she explained about her life away from football. “When I was younger, I was aiming to become an actress, but I was never successful, so I started to create my own comedy skits and easy movies. I’ve been doing it ever since then.”
